The Allure of Coloring is a way to experience The Allure of Matter: Material Art from China from the comfort of your living room.

This week’s coloring page features a work by Zhan Wang, who is renowned for his meticulously made stainless-steel copies of scholars’ rocks.

The coloring sheet was drawn by artist and museum educator Erik L. Peterson. He writes: “The beauty and strangeness of Zhan Wang’s Beyond 12 Nautical Miles—Floating Rock Drifts on the Open Sea lies within physics—the refraction of light on polished metal and the buoyancy of a massive object that is invisibly filled with the lightness of air—but the poignancy of the work lies within politics. Beyond 12 Nautical Miles… references how concepts of land and nation interconnect and how they affect the planet’s shared waterways and us all. Either way, have fun coloring this rare floating rock, this tiny island on a meandering voyage.”
