The Allure of Coloring is a way to experience The Allure of Matter: Material Art from China from the comfort of your living room.

This week’s coloring page features a work by Zhang Huan, who began using ash as an artistic medium following a visit to the Longhua Temple in Shanghai.

The coloring sheet was drawn by artist and museum educator Erik L. Peterson. “As I drew each stooped and toiling figure in Zhang Huan’s ash painting Seeds, I could feel their strength and also their sweat,” says Erik. “I felt myself toiling as well, drawing the minute details of the fields and the specific shape of each figure as I, like them, was stooped over my drawing page. This should be a fun one to color in with bright vibrant colors! The original painting is all ash, in varying shades of white, gray, charcoal, and black.”
